* The 78th FG was equipped with the P-38 when it moved to Europe in November 1942. However, these aircraft were soon called to North Africa, where the 1st and 14th Fighter Groups were running short of aircraft. The 78th FG converted to the P-47 in February 1943 and flew its first missions with the 8th Air Force in April 1943.
9th Air Force in this table refers to the version of that air force formed in Britain as a tactical air force to support the D-Day invasions.
