Lt D.W. Gay's War Effort - Text of Spießruten am den Brenner
This page from Lt D.W. Gay's 'War Effort' is the text from a propaganda leaflet entitled '
Gauntlet on the Brenner'. It begins by claiming that 750 locomotives and 2,500 railway carriages in German service had been destroyed by Allied air power on the lines leading to the Brenner Pass, and then threatens the German troops with the full force of the Allied heavy bombers based in Italy, currently being used to attack Germany and Austria. The idea is to try and encourage German soldiers to surrender in northern Italy and not retreat through the Alps towards Germany. The punchline reads 'Your only safer way home is through Allied captivity!'
Many thanks to Martin Hampton, the son in law of Lt. Gay, for sending us this material. These pages come from Gay's own private notebook which began with similar infomation to his flight log, but became more detailed, and also included a number of interesting items that had been pasted in.
