Lt D.W. Gay's War Effort - 'The Three Officers' (3 of 4)

This page from Lt D.W. Gay's 'War Effort' is the third of four pages of a poem written about Gay and two of his colleagues by Bruna and Marie Luise, two of the friends they made in Italy and kept in touch with after returning to South Africa.

Armando, courteouis, polishes the boots,
and Arthur teaches him English

When on Sunday they have not a great deal to do
they leave Armando and take photographs

when the night comes and they have finished eating
they return to their bedroom thinking of their homes

they think of their dear mothers
that always , but vainly, wait

and of their sweethearts
without kisses

If anything of this you dislike;
excuse us,

Many thanks to Martin Hampton, the son in law of Lt. Gay, for sending us this material. These pages come from Gay's own private notebook which began with similar infomation to his flight log, but became more detailed, and also included a number of interesting items that had been pasted in.
