Testing Portable Wireless equipment at Somersham, c. 1913
Here we see the Marconi 500w pack wireless set being tested at Somersham in 1913. The set was designed to be carried by four horses, with one carrying the electricity generator, another the mast to support the aerial and the other two the radio equipment. To the left of the mast we can just make out the inverted 'V' of one of the saddles. The 500w pack radio was used by the British army throughout the First World War, with later models being adapted to be carried by lorries instead of horses.
