Here we see Soviet Sappers cutting wire at Velikiye Luki , a city that was besieged by Soviet forces from late November 1942 to 16 January 1943, when the Germans finally surrendered. This was one of the few major successes of Operation Mars, a costly offensive that is often overlooked because of the more succesful Soviet attacks around Stalingrad.
