Here we see a line of Soviet infantrymen advancing along a trench during Operation Mars, in the autumn of 1942. The lead man is armed with a Degtyaryov (DP-27) machine gun, the standard light machine gun of the Red Army during the Second World War. Operation Mars was carried out alongside the Stalingrad counterattack, but was a costly failure for the Soviets.
