Here we see Soviet infantry armed with the PPSh-41 submachine gun attacking in the Don Valley during the counterattacks that trapped the German Sixth Army at Stalingrad. The PPSh-41 was the standard submachine gun of the Red Army and was issued in huge numbers, often to entire platoons, giving them much more short range firepower than rifle armed troops.
