Salonika 'Leave Men' protest, Whitehall, 1919
Here we see some of the Salonika 'leave men' protesting against being sent back to the Balkans in Whitehall on 7 January 1919. They had been allowed to return to Britain on temporary leave after the end of the war, and were protesting against the idea that they should be sent back to the Balkans when they had work waiting for them at home. The government conceded their case, and demobilised those of them who did indeed have jobs waiting.
