Paratroop Drop, Nadzab, September 1943
Here we see US paratroops dropping at Nadzab in the Markham Valley on New Guinea on 3 September 1943. This was a daring mission to capture a Japanese airfield twenty miles from the main Allied target at Lae. The smoke screen was created to guard against any Japanese air attack. The airfield was captured without a fight, giving the Allies a key foothold for their two pronged assault on Lae.
