Native Stretcher Bearers resting, New Guinea
Here we see a group of native stretcher bearers taking a rest while carrying a group of Allied stretcher cases back from the front line at Buna-Gona for medical care. The Allied campaign in New Guinea relied heavily on native carriers, without whom it would have been almost impossible to carry supplies along the jungle trails to Buna and Gona or to get the wounded back for medical care.
