Here we see Lord Gort talking with men from the Royal Army Service Corps during a protest at Whitehall on 8 January 1919. 4,000 men from the R.A.S.C. had marched from their camp at Park Royal to Whitehall to campaign for immediate demobilisation. They were met by Sir William Robertson, who was then serving as commanding officer of the Home Forces. He agreed to investigate their case, and the men returned to their base. Soon afterwards the unpopular demobilisation scheme that had been put in place after the end of the war was replaced with one that placed more emphasis on length of service.
