Private Richard Kelliher, V.C.
Here we see Private Richard Kelliher, V.C., who won his Victoria Cross for silencing a Japanese machine gun post that was holding up his unit during the fighting at Lae (Papua New Guinea). Kelliher was born in Ireland but emigrated to Australia between the wars, and was serving in the Australian Army when he won the V.C. When this photograph was taken he was recovering from Malaria.
