Irish Guards, Warley Barracks, March 1918
Here we see a parade of the Irish Guards at Warley Barracks (near Brentwood in south-west Essex) on St. Patrick's Day (17 March) 1918. We see Lord Cavan (commander of the Guard's Brigade) presenting the Guards with a gift of Shamrock from Queen Alexandra. At the same parade he also presented 26 medals to members of the 1st Battalion. Most of the battalion was still in France. Only four days later, on 21 March, the German spring offensives began, and the Irish Guard found itself serving as part of the rearguard during the early retreats.
