Hell's Corner, Guadalcanal

Here we see a group of US Marines in cover at 'Hell's Corner', on their side of the Matankou River on Guadalcanal on 24 October 1942. This was the site of a series of battles between the US Marines and the Japanese, as for some time it marked the western edge of the US beachhead on the island.

A splendid account of the early days of the Guadalcanal campaign, when the Americans were operating on a shoestring, and the Japanese probably missed their best chances to win the battle by underestimating their opponents.
