Here we see one of the prototype Gloster E1/44s from the front in July 1947. Originally developed in case a shortage of engines caused problems for the twin engined Meteor, it was completed as a test bed for the Rolls Royce Nene engine, but flight tests showed its flight characteristics to be poor and performance little better than the Meteor, so the project was cancelled.
