German Troops on Trench Exercises, c.1914
Here we see a group of Germans taking part in trench exercises, probably before the outbreak of the First World War. The peace-time nature of the scene is shown by the cavalry force in the middle distance, and the high position of the photographer. This sort of close bunching of troops was soon abandoned after the war began as it increased the chance of heavy losses to a single lucky artillery shot.
