French Guards at Limburg, c.1918-19
Here we see French guards below Limburg Castle near Sasbach am Kaiserstuhl in the far south-west of Germany, the birthplace of Rudolf of Hapsburg in 1218. Rudolf was the first King of German from the Hapsburg family. His son also held the title, but there was then a gap before the family took long term control in 1438. The area was occupied by the French after the end of the First World War, part of their occupation area east of the Rhine.
