General Eichelberger inspects Native Carriers, New Guinea
Here we see Major General Robert L. Eichelberger inspecting a group of native carriers on New Guinea, probably during the battle of Buna-Gona. Eichelberger was commander of I Corps, and was sent to New Guinea after the initial attacks on Buna and Gona failed. The entire campaign relied on native carriers, without whom it would have been impossible to carry supplies to the fighting troops or to bring wounded back for medical care. This is one of the least formal pictures you are likely to see of a Second World War corps commander!
