Admiral Jean de Laborde

Admiral Jean de Laborde
Here we see Admiral Jean de Laborde, a senior commander in the Vichy navy who ordered the fleet at Toulon to be scuttled on 27 November 1942 to prevent it falling into German hands. He had refused to order the fleet to sail to join the Allies, despite receiving orders from Admiral Darlan to do so. After the war he was tried and condemned to death, but this was changed to a life sentence and he was soon pardoned.
