Here we see the US flag flying over what appears to be the conning tower of UC-97. (Although only UC-9 is visible that submarine sank earlier in the First World War, and this bridge doesn't match that class). UC-97 was a minelaying U-boat that was completed too late to see service, and was taken over by the Americans. A faint 7 may just be visible at the right.

Paints a picture of a very different battle to the more familiar one from the Second World War, with the key difference being the lack of any way to detect a submerged U-boat, leading to very heavy shipping losses.
