Cleaning 155m howitzer, New Georgia
Here we see US artillerymen cleaning the barrel of a 155mm Howitzer during the invasion of New Georgia. The short barrel and square gun shield suggests that this is either a 155mm Howitzer Model 1917 or Model 1918. The Model 1917 was the designation given to the French built Canon de 155 C modèle 1917 Schneider, which was received in large numbers by the US Army during the First World War. The Model 1918 was the designation for examples of the same gun built in the United States, most of which entered service after the end of the First World War. Both types remained in use in the Second World War, until eventually replaced by the newer 155 mm Howitzer M1.
