British Soldiers in Venice, c.1918-19
Here we see a group of British soldiers relaxing in Venice, probably in 1918 or 1919. The city was not far from the front line throughout the First World War, so was a standard destination for soldiers on leave. It came closer to the front line during the Austrian advance after the battle of Caporetto when the Austrians reached the Piave, only twenty miles to the east of the city.
