General Sir William R Birdwood

General Sir William R Birdwood
Here we see General Sir William R Birdwood, commander of the ANZAC corps at Gallipoli, and on the Western Front in 1916. Late in 1917 he moved to the Australian Corps, and in the spring of 1918 took command of the British Fifth Army, which was being rebuild after suffering heavy losses in Operation Michael, the first of the German Spring offensives of 1918. Under Birdwood the Fifth Army took part in the Allied victories later in the year, liberating Lille and Tournai.
