US Troops in Fismes, August 1918
Here we see American troops approaching a barricade at Fismes on the Marne front, which fell to US troops on 4 August 1918. On the following day the Germans withdrew to the north bank of the Vesle. This was part of the aftermath of the German offensive at the second battle of the Marne and saw Fismes change hands repeated during August before finally being secured by the Allies at the start of September.
