Here we see the Iowa class battleship USS New Jersey (BB-62) being launched at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on 7 December 1942. Allied propaganda of the time called her the largest warship ever to be launched, but the Japanese Yamato class ships were significantly larger, and had been launched two years earlier. However the Japanese had kept most details of these ships secret and Allied intelligence underestimated their size.
