This atmospheric colour photograph shows the Gleaves class destroyer USS Gherardi (DD-637) in the New York Navy Yard in June-September 1943, just as the lights were coming on. To the left is the darker bulk of USS Luce (DD-522). If the original caption's dates are correct, this picture must date to after 22 August 1943, when she returned to New York from the Mediterranean.
