Here we see the protected cruiser USS Boston (1884) during the battle of Manila Bay (1 May 1898), where she was the oldest of the four protected cruisers that formed the basis of the American fleet. Note that the crossing rigging has been removed from her masts, presumably to reduce the risk of damage.
