USS Abner Read (DD-526) on fire and sinking, Leyte Gulf
To the right of this picture we see the dark smoke coming up from the Fletcher class destroyer USS Abner Read (DD-526) after she was set on fire by a kamikaze attack on 1 November 1944 in Leyte Gulf. The Abner Read sank soon afterwards, although most of her crew were rescued. To the left we see another destroyer under attack, with a kamikaze aircraft circled above her.
