U-361 under attack
Here we see U-361 being attacked by a Consolidated Catalina of No.210 Squadron, being flown by Flying Officer John A. Cruickshank. The submarine was sunk, but its anti-aircraft fire was so heavy that the aircraft's navigator was killed and Cruickshank
was wounded 72 times. Despite that he survived, helped his co-pilot get the aircraft back to base, and was awarded the Victoria Cross. Cruickshank was so badly wounded that he never commanded a Catalina again, but he did stay in the RAF until 1946. His was the only one of the four Victoria Crosses won by Coastal Command that wasn't posthumous.
