Here we see the Type XB Minelaying Submarine U-118 on the surface during an attack by aircraft from USS Bogue (CVE-9) on 12 June 1943. The original wartime caption decribed her armament as a big gun forward and 20mm guns on the conning tower and aft. She actually carried a 1o5mm gun on the foredeck, a 20mm gun on the tower and a 37mm FlaK gun aft. This picture was taken just as a series of depth charges had entered the water, but before they exploded. Eventually U-118 broke in two and sank with the loss of all but 16 of her crew.
