RAF F.E.2b A852 as night bomber, c.1918

Here we see Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2b A852 ready to take off on a night bombing raid, probably during 1918, when seven night bomber squadrons were equipped with the type. The F.E.2b has been introduced as a fighter aircraft in 1915, using a pusher propeller to free up the nose for the gunner. However it was soon outclassed by fighters using synchronised forward firing guns and tractor propellers, and switched to the night bomber role, where it could still be useful.
