81mm Mortar M1 being fired, New Guinea
Here we see American troops firing a 81mm Mortar M1 during the battle for Buna-Gona on New Guinea. The mortar has been dug into a trench to help hide it from the Japanese. Remarkably the cameraman appears to have caught the exact moment the mortar shell was emerging from the barrel, just visible through the cloud of smoke.
