Store of 250lb MC bombs at RAF Fauld, c.1941
Here we see a tunnel filled with 250lb MC bombs at RAF Fauld, No.21 Maintenance Unit, Staffordshire. This was a former gypsum mine and the main storage depot for HE in Britain. On 27 November 1944 3,500 tons of HE stored in the mine expoded, in one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history, killing somewhere between 70 and 90 people.
