Summons for Medical, 12 December 1940 - Front
The first step on the road to being enlisted in the RAF was the arrival of this summons to a medical. At this point the pace of events is fast - the summons was dated 12 December 1940, the medical took place five days later. After that things rather slowed down. Lawrence Smith's call up papers were dated 31 January 1941, and ordered him to report to the Royal Air Force, Volunteer Reserve on 12 February. On that date Laurence was sent a new letter, informing him that his enlistment had been postponed for an unknown period. He was not actually ordered to join the RAF until 14 July 1941. A gap in the paperwork then exists, and he is next seen receiving a temporary pass on Christmas Eve 1942, by which time he was with No.215 Squadron in India - his signature is found on the back of a menu for the Squadron's Christmas meal for 1942.
