The Royal Navy occupies Scarpanto and Santorini
An aircraft from No.540 Squadron, crewed by Ft Lt Hubert Charles Sidney 'Sandy' Powell and Ft Sgt Joe Townsend, takes a photograph of the Tirpitz and Tromso, confirming earlier intelligence reports. Powell received the DFC for the flight. An attack on her on 29 October failed, but a second RAF attack on 12 November finally sank the Tirpitz.
