British and Canadian troops launch the disastrous raid on Dieppe, a large scale raid on an occupied French port, which is an almost total failure, with most of the British and Canadian troops captured.

War in the Air

First comfirmed combat victory for the Mustang, flying with the RAF over Dieppe.

Eighth Air Force Heavy Bomber Mission No. 2: Twenty four aircraft dispatched to attack German airfield at Abbeville/ Drucat. No aircraft lost.

Eastern Front

German VI Army (Von Paulus) ordered to capture Stalingrad
