Japan declares war on United States and United Kingdom (because of the international date line, this takes place on 8 December in Japan)

Japanese carrier based aircraft attack the American naval base at Pearl Harbor.

Because Pearl Harbor is east of the International Date Line, the simultaneous Japanese attacks on Singapore, Hong Kong and the Philippines take place on 8 December.
