Start of the Second Battle of Arras. In the north Canadian troops capture Vimy Ridge. In the centre VI Corps of the Third Army captures the German front line and in some places advances up to three miles. In the south less progress is made.
The advance has been impressive, but there has been no breakthrough and the Germans are able to rush their reserves into the gap.
Sampson Class destroyer USS Shaw (DD-68) is commissioned.
