War at Sea

HMS Formidable is torpedoed by U 24 at 2.30am on 1 January. A rescue operation is mounted by HMS Topaze, but she only rescues 43 men before she is ordered away, first to find more help and then to avoid a submarine. The Formidable sinks after two hours, with the loss of 547 men.
