Kalka River 1223, David Nicolle

Kalka River 1223, David Nicolle

Kalka River is a historically important but little known battle in the west with the Mongol forces smashing a Russian army and opening up large areas of Eastern Europe for a Mongol conquest. 96 pages crammed full of illustrations, maps, photographs of artefacts etc. The colour plates of the troops are impressive but the 3-D battlefield maps are a little dull which is not surprising considering the nature of the battlefield. The larger scale maps particularly the one of 13th century Asia / Russia are very nice indeed and very interesting. Very detailed information well worth a read if you are interested in the Russians or Mongols of this period. Sadly unlike many ospreys there is no chapter on war-gaming the campaign.
