The Boer War, 1899-1902 , Gregory Fremont-Barnes

Essential Histories

This is a nice shorter history of the Boer War. Rather than concentrate on a chronological history of the war, Fremont-Barnes instead puts the Boer War into its context. There is a good section on the background to the conflict and on the imperial context as well as one on the aftermath of the war in both South Africa and Britain.

There is of course a good section on the war itself, well illustrated and with some excellent maps. Each of the major battles is dealt with in some detail, as is the later guerilla phase of the war. This book would serve as a very good introduction to the topic.
