The XP-47K was the designation given to a P-47D-5-RE used to evaluate the use of a bubble canopy. When equipped with the canopy then in use on the Hawker Typhoon pilot visibility was greatly improved, eliminating a 20 degree blind spot present in all “razorback” Thunderbolts. The XP-47K was complete by July 1943. The bubble canopy became a standard feature on all Thunderbolts from the D-25. The same aircraft was later used to test the extended wings used on the P-47N.
