Rout of Winchester, 14 September 1141

Battle during the Anarchy in which Empress Matilda's forces, then besieging Wolvesey castle in Winchester, was defeated by King Stephen's relief force. After the battle, Robert, earl of Gloucester, one of Matilda's chief supporters, who had been captured in the battle, was exchanged for Stephen, who had been captured at Lincoln.
