Battle of Lewes, 14 May 1264
Battle in which Simon de Montfort, earl of Leicester, defeated Henry III and his son Prince Edward. At the first sign of battle, a group of Londoners fighting with Henry III fled, and Prince Edward left the battle to chase them down. By the time he returned, the battle was already lost. Henry was deserted by his supporters, and captured by Gilbert de Clare, earl of Gloucester, establishing de Montfort's short term control of England.
