Viru Harbour, on the south-eastern coast of New Georgia, seen from the air (looking south). The Japanese had troops in villages on both sides of the harbour entrance, so the attacking Americans (coming from the east or left of picture) had to split their force, and some had to travel all the way around the head of the harbour to reach their target.
