US Soldiers on move, Egypt 1942
The wartime caption described this picture as showing 'A group of U.S. soldiers who have gone out to reinforce the 8th Army arriving at a desert camp', and comes from the period of the battle of Alam Halfa (31 August-7 September 1942). No US group forces actually fought in the Western Desert, but there was a strong USAAF presence in the area, and contemporary newspaper reports refer to US troops taking part in the battle, presumably as part of an attempt to convince the Axis powers that the Eighth Army was stronger than it really was.
