Pontoon Ferry across the Seine, 1944

Pontoon Ferry across the Seine, 1944
Here we see US troops crossing the Seine under cover of lost mist, using a pontoon ferry built by the US Army Engineers. In this case three pontoon floats have been used to carry a couple of sections of temporary roadway. The ferry would have crossed the river with the floats pointing forwards, then turned though 90 degrees to allow its passengers to land. The outboard engine used to power the ferry can be seen at the stern of the central ferry.
