US Officers visiting Cherbourg, 1944
Here we see three senior US naval officers in the ruins of the arsenal at Cherbourg. On the left is Commodore William A. Sullivan, an expert in port salvage operations. In the middle is Rear-Admiral John Wilkes, who played a key part in preparing for the amphibious invasion. On the right is Rear-Admiral Alan G. Kirk, commander of the Western Naval Task Force, the US part of the D-Day invasion fleet.
