Type 89 Grenade Discharger 'Knee Mortar'

Here we see an Allied soldier examining a Type 89 Grenade Discharger 'Knee Mortar' captured in Burma. The Type 89 could fire a dedicated mortar shell or a Type 91 grenade modified to fit. It was not designed to be fired from the knee, but probably due to a mistranslation of the Japanese instructions this belief spread amongst Allied troops. Anyone attempting to rest the mortar on their knee to fire it would soon discover the error of their ways.
