This aerial photograph of the Tirpitz was taken four miles from Tromso, by an aircraft of No.540 Squadron, on 18 October 1944. On 12 November the Tirpitz was sunk by aircraft from Nos.9 and 617 Squadron.
Many thanks to Michael Townshend for sending us this picture. His father, Joe Townshend, was the navigator on the aircraft that took this picture. The pilot, Ft Lt Hubert Charles Sidney 'Sandy' Powell , was awarded the DFC for the mission.
